E.M.B.L. Laboratory Building 21

The renewal of the italian headquarters embracing innovation and flexibility

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to fundamental research in the life sciences. It is funded by public research contributions from more than 25 member states—including most of Europe and Israel—as well as two associate members, Argentina and Australia. The Italian headquarters is located in Rome, within the C.N.R. research campus.

The regeneration project involves the entire building, allowing for an architectural enhancement that reflects the institute’s innovative philosophy and commitment to scientific progress. The new structure is conceived as a courtyard-centered parallelepiped, featuring transparent curtain walls and an external metallic sun-shading system that wraps around the façade.

Inside, research laboratories and offices are laid out according to principles of functional efficiency and flexibility. Social interaction areas are strategically integrated along circulation routes and the pathways leading to the central courtyard. Outdoor spaces have been designed to complement the building and offer visual continuity with the interior work environments.
