The Restoration of the Casali Ghella

The restoration of the Casali Ghella, owned by the Municipality of Rome and located within Parco Volusia (Rome XV Municipality), forms part of the city’s strategic program for the enhancement of its historical, cultural, and environmental heritage. The site is of outstanding natural, ecological, and historical significance, particularly due to the archaeological remains preserved within the park.

Funded by the Municipality of Rome with a €3.5 million investment, the project includes the structural and functional rehabilitation of the three historic farmhouses together with the overall enhancement of the surrounding park and landscape. The intervention will transform the complex into a vibrant civic hub for the local community, featuring Wi-Fi connectivity, study, reading and co-working spaces, a conference and public debate hall, a civic library, a local information center, and a café.

The design program reflects the needs and aspirations expressed by local residents through the participatory planning process launched in 2022. The project identifies the most suitable functions for each building while considering both indoor and outdoor spaces as integral design resources. The overall strategy is based on a comprehensive adaptive reuse approach, transforming the former agricultural complex into a contemporary civic center dedicated to community life and public services.

The project’s primary objective is to recompose the three historic farmhouses into a single, coherent spatial system, where each building functions as an interdependent component of an integrated ensemble. The complex is designed to operate either as a unified facility or as three independent yet complementary buildings, allowing flexibility to accommodate different operational scenarios and community needs.
